The recruiting video. Singing Is Life

Help members learn good presentation skills for the recruiting video.

Updated: 3/3/2003 11:26:00 AM

"Singing is Life" was produced by SPEBSQSA in 2002 as a membership recruiting aid. Pending 2003 budget decisions, it may be a widely distributed piece that most chapters and quartets should have in hand.

As a teacher, your role is to help students discover for themselves the ways this video to spread interest in barbershop harmony and the Society.

How to use it in class

  • Set the stage as outlined in the release notes and on the web site. Emphasize again and again the importance of letting the video speak for itself, and minimize interjections throughout.
  • Answer questions with questions -- neither defend nor over praise. When a student suggests it doesn't reflect his chapter, ask in what ways it does.
  • Key off the enthusiasm of the first few minutes to keep in front of the students the idea that "these emotions and values are what we're about -- how do we keep that message central?"
  • Your students may see the video as a magic bullet. It's not -- it's a conversation opener, not a closer. The video will not recruit for you -- you have to do it for yourself.

Discussion topics for class

  • "Who should see this video?"
  • "How can you begin the conversation that leads to showing this video?"
  • "What's the first thing you should say after the last chord?"
  • What other materials should you have in hand for that first screening
  • Add to this list -- email Brian Lynch or Ev Nau

If this is the opener -- what is the closer?

The membership conversation is ongoing. How do we take the momentum and enthusiasm of this piece and translate it into living a barbershop life?
